NewsPrice rises and scarcity of fireworks for Guy Fawkes' seasonMay 2008 The firework trade has confirmed that there will be shortages of fireworks for Guy Fawkes' Night. The cause is China's hosting of the Olympic Games - and it is thought that retention of fireworks made in the country for the Olympics celebrations is only part of the story. It is understood that an export embargo from June to October on many goods (including fireworks) - in case an explosion may occur - has been imposed to ensure that worldwide news coverage is favourable and 'incidents' are avoided. The chances of such an explosion involving fireworks is very small indeed, but the Chinese authorities are taking no chances. Apart from scarcity, there will be inevitable price rises - some think as much as 30% - owing to various factors, including the reduction of Chinese government subsidies on a number of goods (including fireworks), the cost of raw materials used to make them, and transport costs as fuel prices rise.
