NewsFIREWORKS EDITOR APPEARS ON RANDOM EDITIONJanuary 2008 On BBC Radio 4, on 2 January, Fireworks Editor, John Bennett spoke about the 1749 Royal Fireworks. You can listen to the show on www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/randomedition/pip/z77ig/. Random Edition, a programme introduced by Peter Snow, features an event reported in a newspaper of a particular date. The firework display described in the 2 January programme was to celebrate the Peace of Aix La Chapelle but it was no ordinary display. It was the one for which Handel composed his Music for The Royal Fireworks, and it had everything else. There was a major fire and a fight among those firing the display. It wasn't even a particularly good display, according to Dr Johnson, and the fireworks left were bought for another event - which was, apparently, truly spectacular!
